Pripyat Nursery
According to the plan of Pripayt`s development each of five districts was supposed to have a school and a kindergarten. So that, before the accident there were five schools in the city, however, the amount of kindergartens was much bigger than it was planned. Totally, there were 15 nurseries in the city and it wasn’t enough.
Every kindergarten was named after Soviet cartoons or characters from them. There was Golden Key nursery, Cheburashka, Fairytale, Golden Fish and others.
After the accident, stuff from some kindergartens was evacuated. For example, district 4 was less contaminated in comparison to the rest of the city, so the furniture was evacuated from the nursery.
Today, visiting nurseries gives the feeling of sadness and lost childhood on one hand, and creepiness on the other. Tiny shoes, little beds, a lot of toys and books – all these objects were supposed to bring happiness, but the accident and evacuation painted them black.
Apart from this, the kindergartens were stuffed with propaganda images and stories. There were posters on the walls in the corridors, stories in the books and just images depicting happy communism life. It is also interesting to see which methods were used to affect the youngest ones.
