Krasne Village in Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

Krasne village is located on the left bank of Pripyat River, close to the border with Belarus. One of the meanings of Ukrainian word “krasne” is nice and beautiful. The village had neat streets and lovely architecture; that is why it was given such a name.

There is a wooden church in the centre of the village. It was built in 1800. Chernobyl exclusion zone had more than 20 churches in XX century; however, vast majority of them was destroyed during the War, by Soviet authorities or by forest fires. Only two churches survived till present day. Krasne church is one of them.

When Soviet government was established on these lands, the church was closed and there were attempts to destroy it. Fortunately, inhabitants of Krasne village managed to defeat the building. After 1986 and evacuation of the people, church was abandoned. Nowadays, the priest from Chernobyl town conducts a church service there a couple of times a year. Workers of the zone and former inhabitants of Krasne are able to attend it.

Visiting Krasne is usually possible in multiple day tours. Apart from seeing wooden church, there is a chance to explore the village. There is a small cinema, post office and private houses there. Visiting Krasne village is a good opportunity to meet unique traditional Polissya architecture.

You can see Krasne Village with your own eyes with our exclusive Chernobyl tours.
