Chernobyl Fire Station

When the accident at Chernobyl power plant happened, everybody thought that it wasn’t more than fire on the roof. The firefighters were called into action. The first ones came from Chernobyl power plant fire station; a bit later, colleagues from Pripyat and Chernobyl town arrived too. During the night and the following day, staff from nearest towns was coming too; however, firemen from those three stations were the first responders.

Today, station in Pripyat is abandoned as the rest of the city. It is located close to the police department and can be visited in the majority of tours. There are no trucks there as long as they were contaminated and had to be left at the vehicles graveyards or burial sites. This is one of few Soviet fire stations in Chernobyl zone that can be visited.

Power plant station is still operating as well as Chernobyl fire station. Today, the stations have no less importance than back to the times when the exclusion zone didn’t exist. The second one is especially remarkable because of the monument To Those Who Saved the World at the entrance to the station. It was made by the workers of the exclusion zone to commemorate their colleagues and to thank them. There are not only firefighters, but also medical worker, dosimetrist and power plant operator.
